KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia
General Motors has announced that it has formed a sales and distribution joint venture in Malaysia with local conglomerate DRB-HICOM.
The partnership, called HICOM-Chevrolet, is aimed at building the Chevrolet brand in Malaysia, and initially will market the Aveo sedan, priced from just under $20,000.
GM holds a 51 percent stake in the venture, which plans to establish a local assembly facility and eventually to serve as a manufacturing hub for Chevrolet vehicles in the ASEAN market.
DRB-HICOM has been associated with various GM affiliates for more than 20 years, including partnerships with Opel and Isuzu, as well as Honda.
